Zebra Mussels

What are Zebra Mussels?

Zebra mussels are small freshwater mussels (clams) that are not native to Minnesota.  They grow to about 1 - 2 inches long and have yellow & brown striped shells.

Where are the Zebra Mussels?

Zebra mussels have been found in many different lakes and rivers throughout Minnesota, including Lake Minnetonka, Prior Lake and the St. Croix River.

Impact of Zebra Mussels

Zebra mussels can cause problems for lakeshore residents and recreationists.  Homeowners that take lake water to water lawns can have their intakes clogged.  Mussels may attach to motors and possibly clog cooling water areas.  Shells can cause cuts and scrapes if they grow large enough on rocks, swim rafts and ladders.

How will Zebra Mussels change the way I use my boat?

If you leave your boat in the lake all summer long you are likely to find zebra mussels attached to submerged portions of the hull and motor when you pull your boat out of the water at the end of the season.  In order to clean the Zebra Mussels you would need to wash your boat with hot water (140 degree or hotter) or allow the boat to dry completely for five to seven days. Scrapping might be necessary.  Zebra mussels will cling to almost anything.  It takes as little as one week in the water for zebra mussels to find your boat and begin attaching themselves to it.  Boats and watercrafts are common targets.  Zebra mussels can easily get into the lower unit area of your boat which could eventually cause motor damage.
